Further context on the 63rd Sutra from Patanjali’s Yogasutras
This verse can have multiple meanings. The five pain-bearing Kleshas we have discussed before are the root of suffering as per Yogasutras. Samskara (impressions) is the operating mechanism for these kleshas to rise within a chitta.
Now the continuity of these kleshas and hence the continuity of suffering depends on the control we exert over the mind. Sometimes even after necessary control over the mind, we see they still occur. One explanation of it is that the wave caused in the chitta depending on our Samskaras is itself so strong that our volition is not working on it. Another explanation is that these waves in our mind that cause suffering will rise depending on the repository of actions we have accumulated in this life or the impression of nature onto us in the previous.
The same applies to the level to which these klashas can be subsided. With proper sadhana they will subside either in this life or the next. दृष्ट-अदृष्ट here refers to what’s directly perceptible and what we have arrived with at this incidental reality. The अदृष्ट part also implies the imprint we leave on nature which can rise again either in this life or the next. The effect of our actions will be on both.
