प्रतिपदार्थ: द्रष्टृ = the Seer / pure consciousness / the soul (Purusha), दृश्ययोः = and the Seen / the knowable world / nature (Prakriti), संयोगः = union / false identification / entanglement, हेय = of that which is to be avoided (i.e., future suffering, carried over from 2.16), हेतुः = the cause / the root reason.

तात्पर्यम्: The root cause of that which is to be avoided (future suffering) is the false identification (union) between the Seer and the Seen.

Further context on the 68th Sutra from Patanjali’s Yogasutras

Purusha (the seer) and Prakriti (the seen) are separate. The confusion occurs when the seer confuses the seen/experience to be it. As per Yogasutras, Purusha is the pure and unchanging reality of our self. When we identify ourselves with the fleeting emotions / objects of the universe that’s when the ego arises and thereby the cause of our suffering. We confuse the transient to be the permanent. Like J. Krishnamurthi used to say – the observer is observed.
