Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai is another cult classic. A Pune man falls in love with a Mumbai girl, and the entire plot explores the nuances of being from their respective cities. While the film was a hit in its time, the songs stood out for me. They were absolute bangers, especially Kadhi Tu.
I love the movie for its simplicity. It’s from an era when people played cricket on the streets, when McDonald’s and CCD were the only fancy restaurant options, when you could borrow ration from your shejari (neighbour), and when meeting people wasn’t behind a paywall.
Why I wanted to translate this song and what I think this song is about
I revisited this song after many years. First, it’s a love song, and second, like all Indian love songs, this one is absolutely timeless. It’s the Marathi equivalent of Ajab Si. The verses are deeply poetic, the delivery is stunning, and even without the film, this song stays with you. It has that falling-in-love-in-a-city feeling to it.
What makes it poetic is how the song speaks to the many things we’re unaware of when we fall in love. It treats the whole act as a kind of surrender. Philosophically, it sees love not as a knot that strangles you, but as a conscious decision that we make.
And then there’s the voices of Swapnil Badodkar and Bela Shinde. They’re a genre unto themselves in Marathi music. Their voices are mature yet soft and gentle, with a quality that’s truly madhur. I could listen to this on any given day, and it has aged like wine. I can’t believe it came out sixteen years ago. So much time has passed, but translating this into English felt important because it made my childhood great. Looking back, being around those vibes as a ten-year-old was after all a good influence.
